photo shows a crosswalk across a 4-lane residential street.  On the sidewalk on each side of the street are poles with cylinders attached -- in the cylinders are red flags about a foot square. Carrying a flag across the street is one way that might increase yielding behavior of drivers, although I'm not aware of any research that studies the effect. These flag buckets at Leisure World in Silver Spring, Maryland hold flags for pedestrians to take across the street, then deposit them in the bucket on the other side.
