RESOLUTION 2002 - 10
WHEREAS people who are blind or visually impaired are fully capable of
providing effective orientation and mobility instruction while providing for the safety of their students; and
WHEREAS the policy of the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) is to certify all qualified candidates regardless of disability; and
WHEREAS qualified candidates who are blind or visually impaired are granted certification by ACVREP; and
WHEREAS people who are blind or visually impaired have maintained
certification in orientation and mobility with both ACVREP and AER; and
WHEREAS AER-approved university programs preparing orientation and mobility specialists accept all qualified candidates regardless of disability, including candidates who are blind or visually impaired; and
WHEREAS AER-approved university programs tailor their instruction as needed for particular circumstances to enable each student to achieve the competencies required by ACVREP to provide effective orientation and mobility instruction; and
WHEREAS people who are blind or visually impaired have successfully
completed personnel preparation programs in orientation and mobility at
AER-approved universities;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that on this 21st day of July, 2002, in the city of Toronto, Ontario, that the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) express our unequivocal support and regard for our professional colleagues who are Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists and who are blind or visually impaired.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to the
leadership of the American Council of the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind, and the Rehabilitation Services Administration.
