Things That the Cane May Not Detect:  Small Objects or Holes

 

 

The cane may go around small objects or holes, even when sliding on the floor in constant contact technique.

 

 

Cane goes around a small object without ever contacting it to provide warning to the cane user (in photo B, the cane barely misses the pile of cans):

Aseries of photos shows a person walking toward a stack of cans (one six-pack on top of another). The cane starts behind the pile to the person's left, and as it moves to the right it barely misses the pile and goes around the right side of the pile. when the cane reaches to the left again, it is beyond the pile and misses it altogether.
