Marriott Hotel Description
written in 2000 for attendees of a February 2001 conference
This paper will give a general description of the first three floors of the hotel, then provide more details of each floor, followed by information about places for dog relief. None of the meeting rooms on the first three floors are marked in braille or raised numbers.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The LOBBY FLOOR is on street level and is roughly shaped like a square. The door to enter the hotel from 22nd Street is on the west side of the lobby, and the front desk is next to it in the northwest corner. The elevators and escalators are along the south wall, with a stairwell behind the elevator. Across from the main door (on the east side), a third of the lobby holds a bar, the Atrium Restaurant, and a large open sunken area. A short hall near the front desk (on the north wall) leads to the restrooms, telephones, and two meeting rooms (the rooms are named Georgetown I and II). In the middle of the lobby are two carpeted seating areas with couches and the concierge.
The SECOND FLOOR has a large square opening overlooking the sunken area of the first floor, with a ledge hallway running along all the walls except the south wall. The escalators and elevators are at the south ends of this ledge hallway (escalators are at the southeast corner of the opening overlooking the first floor, the elevators are on the southwest corner). Ballrooms A-E are along the north wall, and the west wall has a corridor leading to ballrooms F-H and the Logan and the Thomas Salons. The restrooms and telephones are near Ballroom E in the northeast corner.
The THIRD FLOOR is accessible only by the elevators and the stairway. When you exit the elevator, you are in a hall leading to the left where it makes a T-intersection with the hall that has meeting rooms 3014-3017.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
When you enter the lobby from 22nd Street through the main front door, you are standing along the west wall, near the left corner. The front desk is just a few feet to your left. It is nestled into the corner, with a counter that faces diagonally into the lobby. Just a few feet to your right is the bell stand, with its counter jutting out from the wall into the room.
There is a large, wide pillar or column about 20 feet in front of you. On the other side of the pillar is a large carpet with couches and chairs facing each other. The concierge desk is on the far side of this carpet, facing you and the main door. A few feet to the right of this carpet is another carpeted seating area.
Beyond the carpeted areas (toward the back of the lobby) there is a large sunken area surrounded by a short wall (about waist-high). On the other side of the sunken area is a bar that runs along the back wall. That bar can be reached only by walking along a corridor to the left of the sunken area.
The sunken area is roughly shaped like a square that has its right side abutting to the wall on the right, and its left corners are cut off. The sunken area fills about a third of the lobby. You can enter the sunken area through three openings in the surrounding wall -- all three are along the left side of the square (two in the corners, one in the middle of the left side). If you walk to the left of the sunken area, you pass the short wall of the sunken area on your right, and on your left you pass a wall with the door to the Atrium restaurant. The sunken area actually is the smoking section of the Atrium restaurant.
The larger part of the lobby (the part with the two carpeted seating areas) is bordered on the right with a wall that has the elevators, escalators entrance, and stairwell. If you go to the elevators and follow the wall to the left (toward the sunken area), you would go around the side of the elevators into a recessed area that has the escalators on the left, and the door to the stairwell on the right.
On the wall opposite of the elevators (on your left when you enter the hotel) is a short hallway leading to the restrooms. The entrance to this hallway is not far from the front desk. If you walk into this hallway, you come to a T-intersection where this hallway meets another short hall. If you do not turn right or left but continue straight across this hall, you enter a recessed area, with the men's room facing you on your left, and the women's room facing you on your right. If you turn left when you reach the intersecting hall, you find the Georgetown I meeting room at the end of that hall, and if you turn right when you reach the intersecting hall, you will pass the phones along the wall immediately on your right, and the door to the Georgetown II meeting room is along the wall on your left (past the phones).
Second Floor:
Each break-out room on the second floor has one double door into the hall.
When you reach the second floor from the elevator, you walk out into an open area. On the wall to your left is an entrance to a wide hall leading to meeting rooms. If you enter this hall, you pass two rooms on your left (the Logan Salon, then the Thomas Salon). The hall then turns right and Ballrooms F, G, and then H are on your right.
If you are standing once again with your back to the elevators, to your right is a large square opening overlooking the sunken area of the first floor. This opening butts up to the wall with the elevators, and is bordered on three sides by a railing which starts from the wall beside you. If you follow the railing, you'd walk away from the elevators along one side of the opening, then the railing would turn right and you'd walk along the hall that has Ballrooms A-E. Then the railing would turn again and you'd walk along another hall with the restroom area immediately on your left, then the door to the business center on your left, and last on your right would be the escalators going down to the first floor.
If you stand again with your back to the elevators, the wall with Ballrooms A-E is in front of you, and the wall with the restroom area and business center is on your right (on the other side of the opening). To reach Ballrooms A-E, walk straight ahead from the elevators to the wall in front of you, and follow the wall toward the right. The first doorway you'll reach is Ballroom A, with the other Ballrooms next. (Note: The Ballroom wall is not straight -- it juts into the opening by the elevator, so you may need to walk around a corner before reaching Ballroom A.)
When you reach the Ballroom wall and turn right, you'll be walking along a hall with the Ballrooms on your left, and on your right will be the railing overlooking the first floor. Just after you pass Ballroom C, the railing turns to the right but if you continue straight, you enter a very short hallway that has the doors to Ballroom D and E on your left. On your right is another entrance to the restroom area.
The restroom / telephone area on this floor is oddly shaped. It has two entrances, both of which are open, with no doors. One entrance is in the short hall across from Ballrooms D and E (I'll call it the "Ballroom entrance" to the restroom area), the other entrance is back just around the corner, in the hallway to the escalators, across from the railing (I'll call it "Railing entrance" to the restroom area). If you enter the "Railing entrance" to the restroom area, you face a wall that has a row of wall-mounted telephones straight ahead of you, with a couch to the right of the phones. The women's bathroom is on that wall on the other side of the couch, and the men's bathroom is on the same wall, beyond the women's room. If you enter the Railing entrance again, on the wall to your right is a row of enclosed phone booths and then a water fountain, and on the wall to the left is a house phone and then the Ballroom entrance to the restroom area. If you enter that Ballroom entrance to the restroom area, the row of wall-mounted telephones will be on the wall to your left, followed by a couch, the women's room, and then the men's room, all on the left.
Third floor:
When you exit the elevator on the third floor, you are at the end of a short hall that leads to the left. Across the hall, directly in front of you, is the entrance to the health club, with exercise machines and a pool. If you turn left from the elevator and walk to the end of the hall, you reach a T-intersection with another hall that goes left and right. If you continue straight and cross that hall, you will reach the wall that has meeting rooms 3014 - 3017. Each meeting room has two doors into the hall. When you reach that wall, you are between the two doors of meeting room 3014; one door is far to your left, the other door is very near you, on the right. If you turn right and follow that wall, immediately after the door to 3014 is the first door to meeting room 3015, followed by the other door to 3015 and then the doors to meeting rooms 3016 and 3017.
DOG RELIEF AREAS:
There are several choices for dog relief areas:
1. Tree surrounds: Areas of dirt and decorative short grasses that surround trees along the sidewalk (these areas are about 3 feet by 9 feet);
2. A level planting area about five feet wide running along the sides of the building on the other side of 22nd Street from the hotel, with bushes and large areas of dirt and low ground cover;
3. A triangular grassy area about 15 feet on each side, at a tiny park a block and a half from the hotel entrance.
DIRECTIONS to DOG RELIEF AREAS:
The hotel front door is in the middle of a short circular driveway. To reach the sidewalk of the street when you exit the hotel, you need to turn right or left and follow the sidewalk along the edge of the driveway as it follows the building then turns toward the street.
NOTE: In Washington DC, when the white walk signals flash, it means there might be traffic turning into your path; if the white walk signal is solid (not flashing), it means no traffic can turn in front of you. All signals in Washington DC are fixed-time, so there is no button to push.
1. TREE SURROUNDS:
There is one "tree surround" near the curb along 22nd Street, about 2/3 the way from the hotel entrance to M Street (turn left when leaving the hotel). This has low junipers near the tree, but to the right and left of the junipers are two dirt areas each about 3 feet square.
A closer row of "tree surrounds" can be reached by turning right at the front door of the hotel, walk to the corner of the first street (it is an alley named Ward) and turn right again. The tree surrounds are near the curb along Ward, starting about 10-20 feet from the corner.
NOTE: to reach the sidewalk of the street, you must walk in front of an exit from the hotel's underground parking garage which is at the end of the hotel building. Pedestrians who walk close to the building are not visible to the drivers until they are in front of the exit.
2. PLANTING AREA across the street
To reach the level planting area across the street, turn left when you leave the hotel and walk along 22nd Street to the next corner, which is M Street. Turn right and cross 22nd Street. There is a building at the corner, and the planting area surrounds the building on both sides. There are lots of dirt areas and low growth near the corner, but as you walk further from the corner there are more bushes, with fewer places for the dog.
NOTE: 22nd Street is 2-3 lanes wide. Traffic on 22nd goes one way to your right (heading back to the hotel, or north), so there is potential of traffic turning in front of you. M Street also goes one way, going the same way that you walk when you cross from the hotel to the planted area (west).
3. PARK WITH THE GRASSY AREA
To reach the park with the grassy area, turn left from the hotel and walk to M Street, turn left again and walk one block to New Hampshire Avenue. Cross New Hampshire, and the park is on the corner. The grassy area is at the corner, bushes and benches are further back.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The intersection of New Hampshire and M Street is not perpendicular -- they cross at a 45-degree angle! Therefore when you cross to go to the park, you must align facing 45 degrees to the left. When you reach New Hampshire, you may find a narrow curb ramp at the corner. However, do not cross there, because the crosswalk is far to the left of that ramp. If you follow the curb from the corner past the ramp, you'll find a large metal traffic signal box (about 4 feet high), then a tree, and then a bus shelter. The crosswalk is between the metal box and the bus shelter. To align correctly when you face the curb, turn about 45 degrees to the left. The street is 4 lanes wide although it will seem wider because you are crossing at a diagonal angle.
